"I didn't want to be seen," Jensen recalls. "I didn't want to be visible because if I was, I could get hurt."

Jensen grew up in a home marked by fear, instability and violence. As the oldest child, she felt compelled to protect her younger brothers and took on a level of responsibility that was never hers to carry. She learned to pay attention to what was happening around her, anticipate problems and recognize danger.

It would take decades before she fully understood how deeply those experiences had shaped her.

Today, Jensen is the founder and CEO of Heart Financial Group and has worked in financial services since 1994. Her work centers on helping individuals and business owners better understand their circumstances, recognize risks and make informed decisions about their futures.

The contrast is striking.

The little girl who once wanted to disappear now spends much of her life educating, speaking and helping others understand things they may not have been able to see clearly on their own.

But Jensen's journey toward that clarity began long before her professional career.

She was five years old when a friend invited her to a Good News Club. There, Jensen heard a message that stood in stark contrast to what she was experiencing at home.

She was told that God loved her.

"To hear a story about Jesus and God and how they loved me, that was all I had to hear," Jensen says.

A local church subsequently reached out to her family, and Jensen continued attending throughout grammar school and high school. She studied and memorized Scripture, and her faith became a source of stability during an otherwise unpredictable childhood.

"That was really my anchor as a child," Jensen says. "I think that's why I was able to survive."

Faith did not make the effects of her childhood disappear overnight. Understanding what had happened to her, and how those experiences continued influencing her life, would become a much longer journey.

As Jensen began looking more deeply at her past, she recognized something she had never fully connected before.

The child who constantly watched for danger had become an adult unusually attuned to risk.

The older sister who instinctively wanted to protect her brothers had become someone deeply motivated to help protect others.

And the little girl who lived with uncertainty had developed a relentless desire to understand what was happening beneath the surface.

"I think understanding risk came out of my trauma," Jensen says. "I'm a problem solver, and I think that came out of my trauma too."

That realization has taken on new meaning as Jensen has examined why she feels such passion for her work.

"I knew I was passionate about this business," she explains. "But why? Where does that come from?"

For Jensen, part of the answer appears to lie in the distance between the child she was and the woman she became.

She describes her childhood in terms of fear and confusion. But that confusion was not simply about what was happening around her; as a child, Jensen was actively trying to solve it, asking what she had done wrong, what she needed to change and what she could do to make things better.

Years later, during EMDR therapy, hearing her own experiences reflected back in plain language brought a realization that changed how she understood her place in what had happened.

Jensen adds: "I remember thinking, 'Wait a minute. I was a child. They were the ones who were responsible.'"

The responsibility Linda Jensen embraces as an adult is different: not blame for what happened, but a choice about what she does with what remains. Her journey has included faith, forgiveness, healing and a willingness to confront experiences that would have been easier to leave unexplored.

She summarizes that transformation in four words:

"I went from confusion to clarity."

Today, clarity is also something Jensen tries to give the people sitting across from her.

Financial planning can confront people with questions they may not know how to answer. Will I have enough income in retirement? What happens if my spouse dies first? What risks have I overlooked? How will taxes affect the plans I've made? What happens to my family or business if circumstances suddenly change?

Jensen's approach is built around education and helping people understand their options before making decisions.

"One of the gifts I have is taking things that are pretty complicated and making them easy enough to understand," she shares. "It's important to me that people understand what I'm recommending."

Jensen does not describe the trauma itself as a gift. Nor does she believe difficult experiences automatically make someone stronger.

Her interest lies in what can happen afterward.

"We don't have to stay where we are," explains Jensen. "If we're stuck, we can actually make changes and, in some cases, have a complete transformation."

That may ultimately be why she is willing to share this part of her life.

Not so readers will feel sorry for the little girl she once was, but so they might think differently about their own experiences.

Some chapters of life are never chosen. Understanding them does not change what happened. But it may change what happens next.

The little girl who once believed safety meant remaining unseen is no longer trying to disappear.

And perhaps the more important question for the rest of us is not simply what happened in our past, but what we choose to do with what remains.
