A Founder Who Started With 50 Wayuu Bags Now Funds 5000 Families a Month

Sep 8, 2026

Jessy Liang, founder of Guangzhou Wayuu Culture Gallery, a direct-source Wayuu importer, announced monthly income support for 5,000 Wayuu households and traced it back to a single 2014 sourcing trip that later turned an export business into an origin-direct importer.

-- When artisan orders in Colombia began drying up this year, Jessy Liang did not wait for the market to recover. The founder of Guangzhou Wayuu Culture Gallery, a direct-source Wayuu importer, used a recent talk to Guangzhou's business community to announce direct income support for thousands of weaving households, and to explain how a single suitcase of sample bags in 2014 grew into the network now large enough to make that support possible.

Twenty Years, Two Very Different Businesses

Speaking to a business conference in Guangzhou, Jessy Liang, founder of Guangzhou Wayuu Culture Communication Co., Ltd., operating as Guangzhou Wayuu Culture Gallery, opened not with the company's now-familiar Wayuu bag story but with a fact many in the audience did not know: the business is over twenty years old, and for its first decade it barely touched imports at all. From 2005 to 2014, roughly 80 percent of its trade moved in the opposite direction, shipping Chinese-made handicrafts outward to South America. Import overtook export only after 2014, and today accounts for more than half of total volume.

Liang framed that reversal as the backdrop for everything that followed. "People assume this company was built around Wayuu bags from day one. It wasn't. It spent a decade as an export house before it ever became a direct-source Wayuu importer," Liang said.

Why a Suitcase Trip in 2014 Changed the Business

That shift traces to a single trip. Liang brought back an initial batch of about 50 handwoven bags from Colombia in 2014, sourced through the same wholesale-market channels most importers still rely on today. What followed was less a business plan than a slow realization, according to Liang: buyers everywhere claimed Colombian origin, but almost none could name the household behind a specific bag.

"Buying through a market gets you inventory. It doesn't get you a relationship with anyone who actually made it," Liang told the meeting. Starting in 2016, the company began building direct relationships with individual Wayuu households in La Guajira instead, a slower and more labor-intensive approach that Liang argued was the only way to eventually call the business an origin-direct Wayuu importer with a straight face.

From Household Relationships to a 5,000-Family Network

That relationship-first approach became structural in 2017 with the founding of PACTUS GROUP SAS, a dedicated sourcing entity based in Bogotá. Nearly a decade later, the network includes more than 5,000 partner artisan households, supplying an estimated 70 percent of the highest-quality Wayuu bag inventory the company can access. A Remake customization division, added in 2022, layers imported leather and premium hardware onto the traditional woven base, aimed at buyers who want a bag for daily commuting or a date night, not only ceremonial use, while keeping the underlying sourcing traceable back to the household that wove it.

"None of that scale means anything if it's not still tied to a real household on the other end. That's the whole difference between an origin-direct Wayuu importer and someone reselling stock," Liang said.

The Announcement: Funding Basic Living Costs for 5,000 Households

The centerpiece of Liang's talk was newer than the company's supply chain story. As global demand has softened, Liang said, weaving orders have fallen across several Wayuu communities, and for most of these households there is no other income to fall back on. Guangzhou Wayuu Culture Gallery has now formalized a partnership with the Colombian consulate to cover basic monthly living costs, set at 100 US dollars per family, for 5,000 Wayuu households.

Funding for the program runs through a new consumer product, the Wayuu Care Box, priced at 718 RMB. Each purchase covers one household's living costs for a month. In return, buyers receive two traditional Wayuu bags, the option to add leather and hardware customization at no extra cost, and something Liang described as the part buyers respond to most: a short video message recorded by the specific family their purchase supported, addressed to them by name.

"A bag is a nice object. A video from the person your money actually reached is a different kind of proof," Liang said. "It's not charity in the abstract. It's one purchase, one family, one month covered."

Where the Business Goes From Here

Liang closed by tying the company's growth outlook directly to the relief program, arguing the two cannot be separated going forward. As more competitors enter the Wayuu bag category, Liang expects buyers to increasingly favor suppliers who can prove origin and offer real differentiation over those competing on price alone, a shift Guangzhou Wayuu Culture Gallery is positioning for by expanding both its household network and Remake capacity. The consular partnership, Liang said, will continue for as long as the broader slowdown keeps orders soft.

"What started as fifty bags in a suitcase is now several thousand households whose income partly depends on this holding together. That's not a side project anymore, it's the responsibility that comes first," Liang said.

The talk ended with a direct ask to the room: introductions to livestream hosts and content creators who can help carry the Wayuu story further, buyers and channel resellers seeking differentiated stock, high-quality women's communities, organizations with gift-purchasing needs, handicraft enthusiasts, and anyone willing to share the culture behind the product on social platforms.
